Community Care of the Sandhills (CCS) received funding from the Kate B. Reynolds (KBR) Charitable Trust to support the expansion of telepsychiatry services to 40 primary care practices in our network. Telepsychiatry is a cost-effective consultation and treatment service provided to patients with behavioral health concerns through secure video conferencing, available at the patient's primary care physician's office.
We are pleased to report the Sandhills Telepsychiatry Project (STeP) is progressing well. We currently have 17 active telepsychiatry sites, and satisfaction remains high for both patients and providers, with 94% of patients stating they are pleased with their overall experience.
Three of the seven counties in the CCS catchment area do not have a board-certified psychiatrist. And of those counties that do, many providers do not treat Medicaid or uninsured patients. Telepsychiatry is being implemented to bridge the gap in patient care and to help improve outcomes. CCS continues to promote integrated care throughout the network.
Through the partnership established with Easter Seals UCP, Monarch NC and FirstHealth of the Carolinas, CCS has had the opportunity to share experiences with the STeP and telepsychiatry models to several healthcare organizations in North Carolina and other states, as well as administrative staff members at Community Care of North Carolina (CCNC) and several CCNC networks. Furthermore, these opportunities have encouraged conversations between CCS and telemedicine partnerships, healthcare informatics companies, and behavioral health providers around the continued development of a sustainable service.
Many of our providers have heard or received material about Community Care of the Sandhills' telepsychiatry project, and CCS would like to extend an invitation to any of our providers who are interested in joining the project or would like to learn more about what we offer. You can opt for a "Lunch and Learn", a brief "Provider Meeting" or "Telephone Discussion.
